Why Enrol in the ROTC?

Being a freshman, you have the option to choose from National Service Training Program (NSTP) any of the three program components namely: ROTC, CWTS and LTS. Still more and more freshmen are now enrolling in the ROTC. What made these freshmen college students enrol in the ROTC program? Opinions and comments are welcome and your suggestions will be highly appreciated for the program to adopt to the current needs of the youths of our country.

  1. It is because after enrolling in the NSTP: ROTC a student is packed with leadership skills which cannot be obtained in the other NSTP courses, Joining the ROTC is fun because you will meet other students who also wanted to increase their leadership training, also it may give a chance to defend our home country and improves one's patriotism

  2. It is because you will learn more things in ROTC than the other choices.You will develop your skills and you will meet other students from different colleges.In this course,you will undergo military training and it is exciting than the other courses offered.Also,I took because I don't want to have sunday classes when I am in second year.But the primary reason why I enrolled in ROTC is because I want to be like them.

  3. ROTC is an essential part in our lives because it's very helpful for the youth especially in their future. We're living in a world full of peace & murder so having skills in Army Tactics would really be a great advantage for us.
    Unlike the other NSTP courses, which only aims the order within their community, ROTC aims for the Peace & Order not only within their vicinity, but also among our country and beyond!!!

  4. i chose rotc as my nstp not because i have idea of what we are doing here but i join because of the values i will learn from this nstp that others cant offer. Also, the rotc teaches us to be more mature, more responsible, and more disciplined citizen of our country. unlike the other nstp courses you will do community service and learn nothing or maybe a little but not like the rotc can offer.

  5. I enrolled because i like to learn how to handle troops which needs leadership; and we can learn them here. Simply put, I want to be the leader people want me to be.

  6. frankly i dont want to be enrolled. i just thought of having this because it will be more easier if i have my nstp now than next year. But of course that reason is still not enough for me to do so. i had other thoughts like, how do they do it in ROTC... how do things work there? i want to experience a lot of new things. i want to experience something that i am sure i will not going to experience in the latter parts of my year. i can do the other community service anytime i want but i can't just join the military just because i want to experience this.. :)

  7. Im just doing my part not as a student but as a future reservist. To defend my motherland against invaders. ROTC is the most noble NSTP Program.

  8. I joined the ROTC because it trains the youth in mind and body through lectures and physical exercise and it helps us develop discipline, leadership and patriotism for our country. For me, military training is fun and exciting experience than in other NSTP courses.

  9. I enrolled myself in the ROTC program for the reason that I treat this as an honor to my family and my beloved country whom I endeared most. Also I felt that this is an immediate obligation of any college student to his country who gave him a beautiful name of being a FILIPINO.

  10. the reason why many freshmen college students enrolled themselves including me in this kind of program was because ROTC was the most challenging yet interesting type of NSTP, ROTC will enhance and develop not just our physical or psychological aspects but it will also develop our NATIONALISM, our love for our own country ( PHILIPPINES ).

  11. Why did I enroll in R.O.T.C.?
    (Artikulo ayon sa Teorya ng Dekonstruksyon)

    I, Mars Christian Sta. Ines, a student of Faculty of Pharmacy, enrolled in the UST-ROTC unit simply because I want to learn new things like simple lectures and practical exercises about drills and ceremonies, map reading, individual combat tactics, and weapon training. I also want to ameliorate my own frailties (eg. laziness, etc.), learn how to endure hardship, and to develop discipline within myself.

    I enrolled in this course not just for fun nor just for adventure. I enrolled because through this course I would be able to express my love for my country and for my fellowmen, because as a student, I am an epitome of the 21st century and have all the responsibilities to embody and must attain wisdom by understanding words of insight, acquiring discipline and prudent life, and doing what is just and fair to be able to be a good citizen of the Republic of the Philippines and I can only do this through the help and guidance of the UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS- RESERVED OFFICERS TRAINING CORPS. Thank you for reading my short article and may God Bless you.....

  14. I have chosen ROTC among other National Service Training Programs because I had already experienced CAT in my high school. I wanted to experience the ROTC in college to apply also the skills that I had learned when I was in high school. Another reason why I have chosen ROTC is that I wanted to finish it within my first year so that I can concentrate more on my academic studies on the next years to come.

  16. Why I chose NSTP-ROTC rather than CWTS and LTS?

    I am Verlyon Yojie V. Pilitro, a student from College and Commerce and Business Administration from the Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas, The Catholic University of the Philippines because of these reasons:

    1. Because when I am in 4th year,we have CAT, but only lectures, we don't have a training so, I joined ROTC because I want to experience training exercises and to apply lectures given to us through executing it in training.
    2. I chose UST-ROTC unit because it helps me to become a more responible person.
    3. Because I believe that joining ROTC can uplift all my aspects in my life (Physical, Emotional, Social, Intellectual, and Spiritual)
    4. By joining NSTP-ROTC, I can express my patriotism to my country and I can contribute to our State as a student and a Filipino Citizen
    5. I joined NSTP-ROTC because I want to give tributes to the soldiers who sacrifice their time for their family and their life to secure our country and to secure the enjoyment of our rights

    I would like to thank Department of Military Science and Tactics- University of Santo Tomas Reserve Officers Training Corps Unit for giving me a chance to be a part of NSTP-ROTC as a basic cadet.
    Thank you for allowing me to express my reactions and comments.God bless us all! God Bless the Philippines.

  17. I joined the ROTC for my NSTP because I am very interested in the history and what would history be without the military? I've always been fond of military shows and movies so I thought it would be a great experience to join ROTC. I guess one show that influenced me was the series Band of Brothers, the story of Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment during World War II. They were included in the landing at Normandy during D-Day.

    Another reason would be the soldiers themselves. I've always been fascinated by how they risk their lives to serve the country. I mean, I'm not sucking up or anything but I've always been interested in these things. How they are trained to lead, how they are trained to fight and how they die willingly in serving the country. It's always been intriguing for me. I always remember how Col. Richard Winters handled the situations in 'Band of Brothers'. I want to be trained like him, to be level-headed in the most dire of situations. I want the training that this program can provide.

    My siblings say that I will most probably regret my decision in joining the ROTC. But it's my decision and I will stick to it.

  18. What is ROTC?

    It means Reserve Officers Training Corps. As its name implies, the idea of the ROTC was to train university students to be prepared to defend the country. In case war broke out, these reserve officers could be called into service to provide competent leadership.

    Why did I enrolled in Rotc?

    Frankly I enrolled ROTC so that I won't take up my NSTP on my 2nd year in College. I want to be more efficiet in my studies for the next years. My second purpose, is to have discipline. I want to be directed to my Life time goal, for I believe " Disciple conqueres it all '. Having trained focused goal, I can achieve my greatest potential. Thirdly, I chose ROTC because my father want me to join. I want to be my father's son. I want to obey him through this I can express my thankful heart to him. Fouthly, I want to learn the basic military moves and commands.I want to learn how to be a soldier. I want how to feel, even for a year, how to be a hero.And finally, I want to develop my leadership skills. I want to be a good leader. As of now, I am getting great leadership skills tha would help me on pursuing my dreams.

    On top of all, I really want to join this Program. No one forced me to do it. My mind was clear when I enrolled in UST yhat I would take up ROTC as my NSTP. I am Happy and satisfied with my desicion, because I can see myself far improving.

    Thanks for giving me an opportunity to post my comment here! ;)

  21. I joined the NSTP-ROTC because during my high school days, I already experienced community service and teaching students, an activity held in our school temporarily wherein students would act as teachers for three days. I believe that the ROTC in the University of Santo Tomas would be the right choice for my NSTP program. For me, joining the ROTC only knocks once in a life time. It is an opportunity that every student must entail. Joining the ROTC means giving honor to those who fought for our country, to history and to our forefathers. Lastly, I do believe that by loving your own country also means loving nature and God Himself who created it.

  22. I enrolled NSTP-ROTC because I want to be shaped as a true Thomasian Filpino that can serve the country. I also want to add more experience for myself. As a student, joining the rotc is an application of the skills I've learned when I was in my fourth year in high school, in our C.A.T. days. And I also need to add more skills for myself to become more shaped. ROTC can also be fun. There are some activities that will develop many traits like leadership and unity. These activities will make a better you out of the old you.

  23. I enrolled in nstp-rotc because i prefer to learn more about military discipline and leadership. I joined also because as a student, I want to know what I can do to improve people and myself. Also, because I was informed that it is not more on just training. It also includes recreational activites that can help enhance what ever skills we have.

  24. I enrolled in ROTC because it sounds challenging. I also want to obtain good discipline that can be obtained through training. ROTC wpould be a lot better if the officers arrange a specific time for the mass. It's inconvenient to not know the actual starting time.

  26. Adventure. This is the word that I expect in ROTC. I want to experience a strict discipline that can trigger my emotional and physiological state of being. It's also my burden to join because the CAT program on my previous school is passive. I want the REAL military training. Even though that I'm a girl, I know that I'm strong enough to face this training. Moreover, it is my desire to give myself to our country. A nationalistic heart, as I can say.

  27. When I was on the process of deciding what NSTP program would I take,I told myself not to take ROTC,because some say that the officers would put you under the sun or make you run around the campus several times when you did something wrong.The truth is I joined UST-ROTC so that I could focus more on my studies next year.Another reason that made me join are some exciting activities like paintball,live gun firing and rappeling.But then I realized some other more important things than those I already mentioned.It is not all about being free of NSTP next year or fun activities,but it is about discipline and gaining self-esteem for myself,I realized that if I joined UST-ROTC,I wouldn't be the same lame old girl just like before.I thought that if I will join ROTC I could be someone else who has self-esteem,confidence and discipline.

  28. At first I really don't like to enroll in the ROTC. It is because a lot of people would tell me that the ROTC Officers would love to see us suffering from the heat of the sun and punishing us all the time. But this perspective of mine changed when the training Sundays began. It is then that I realized that I was lucky that I joined the ROTC unit of UST. Not only I would learn the true concept of discipline, respect , and love for the nation, but I can also have some fun. I meet new people from the different colleges of UST. I became more sociable and it is from their own experiences that I also learn. Right now I do not have any regrets in joining the ROTC for I know that I made the right choice and my choice will help a lot in the near future.

  29. I chose rotc because i believe that this would develop my patrionalism and nationalism. My country needs me and i need my country. One way of serving our nation is to have self discipline, self reliance and courage to do whatever endeavor is assigned to me. All these positive traits can be gained here in rotc. The different activities held in rotc also gives me enthusiasm to participate in the latter. Hoping for the best in the rotc unit of UST.

Since, it is just the course available for Freshmen so I chose it but now I realize that I am enjoying my every meeting in ROTC. though sometimes it is very tiring, I still enjoy it. Even with the lectures,I really learn a lot from them. I don't just sleep.. ^.^ i really take down notes and listen carefully. I also enjoy the different drills given to us. our officers, they are also good especially Ma'am Nakagawa, she is always approachable. I now realize that I made the right decision. It is really good that I chose this course. I am really looking forward for more activities to come.

  31. Actually I joined ROTC because of my bestfriend's influence. I really don't like to ROTC at first but as trainings passed, I am starting to like the ROTC. It taught me how to discipline myself. I learned how to control and be a better person. I learned to be more attentive when a lecturer discusses the lesson. It taught me to be patient in every obstacle that will come my way. It taught us to be more competent in every aspect of life. And now, I am enjoying the training, I don't feel any regrets that I listened to my bestfriend 'coz I am learning so much on this training. I am proud that I belong to the ROTC unit of UST.

  33. Well, I chose ROTC mainly because the activities that we’ll be having seemed fun. My reason doesn’t really concern anything about military interest or anything of that sort, nor do I like marching and taking commands. I merely am an adventurous fellow seeking out some simple enjoyment from trying out new things such as ROTC. Currently, my only regret is the fact that I get to bask in the sun more than I need to and getting dreadful headaches ergo, as well as having the same skin tone as my favorite character Hattori Heiji. However, I do seem to enjoy ROTC somehow because not only do I experience and try out new stuff but I also get to meet new people and make friends. Therefore, I can say I’m glad I chose ROTC.

  34. Bakit ko pinili 'yung ROTC??? Hmm...

(in fact, di ako masyado interesado dito.....dati)

  36. I chose rotc as my nstp course because from what i heard it is the only nstp with a fixed schedule and it is taken on the freshman year so once i am able to pass this(if ever i pass) i will have more time for studying next year, and i also want to be more disciplined and have a good leadership quality and i think i made the right choice, besides even if it's tiring it's still fun

    PS: can you change my mispelled name on the attendance sheet coz Ronkerwin there is spelled as Ronkirwin up to now...thanks

  37. I chose rotc because I really want to learn how to use guns and other military services. I'm so into adventure and activities such as rappelling, firing, and etc. It's a lot of fun. Even though I'm having difficulties in doing those activties(marching, commands, and etc.)still I'm enjoying it. The officers are so kind. They are treating us fairly. And because of rotc I'm meeting new people. I'm able to woke up early.:D

  38. Joining the NSTP-ROTC is both challenging & fun at the same time. This is the only NSTP component that mixes fun, pleasure, fulfillment & satisfaction in the usual boring routinary studying. I joined ROTC simply because I wanted to experience adventure without having to sacrifice the time for my studies and truly, I was on the right track. Aside from personal fulfillment, ROTC takes pride in equipping the basic cadets with proper discipline,nationalism, patriotism & the sense of brotherhood and leadership all rolled into one. Indeed, I will never see myself regretting the choice I made. My college life will never be on its summit of wonderful experiences & memories if ROTC will not be a part of it. :-) I AM CERTAINLY PROUD TO BE A THOMASIAN CADETTE!

  39. "Discipline"

    I personally convinced my parents for me to be enrolled in the R.O.T.C. program as my N.S.T.P. service since I believe that a civilian who desires to serve his home state should first recognize and experience "Discipline". Since childhood, I have been joining all sorts of legitimate training organizations for I believe that one's discipline should also be molded formally. As a growing teen, I realized that years from now, my generation and I will be serving the country in many different ways so I asked myself why not start now in my own little way. Last year, before I graduated from my harsh, time-consuming, and stern high school C.A.T. program, we were forged by a strict military discipline applied to us by my commandant and my fellow students who were officers during that time but I can say that I am truly grateful to cross those preparation since I think that the skills and knowledge I acquired are way more advance than those who missed the rigorous but worthwhile training. Likewise, I think that the R.O.T.C. program is another preparation, though heavier than before, for the college students to gear up not only for battle but also for any exigency in the future. Other than that, I am also inspired by the bands of historical icons who dwelt during the age of hostility for I am amazed on how did they handled their nation and surpassed past detrimental events, one of which is Publius Flavius Vegetius Renatus, a Latin writer during the late Roman Empire who once made mentioned of one my favourite quotes "If You Desire Peace, Then Prepare For War".

  40. Joining the NSTP-ROTC program was one of the most challenging choices i've done at enrollment time. I was having a hard time choosing what program to take. At first, I chose ROTC because I wanted to get it over with, but now, it doesn't really seem so bad now. It's so much fun. I'm having a good time. the trips, drills and lectures are helping us be molded into snappy and disciplined individuals. I haven't undergone the CAT program at high school so I took this to have that "experience". I hope to have a lot of fun through the several training days. The sacrifice of sleeping early on a saturday night, giving up your gimmicks, is quite worth it.

    I joined the ROTC program because it helps us gain a sense of leadership, develop respect, learn the essence of patriotism, be informed about the threats of our nation and what's really going on here that news can't provide. tska po natututo kami ng basic military skills, which we can apply for self defense and to defend others as well. But what I love most about ROTC is that I get all these benefits while having fun at the same time.

  46. TO BE HONEST, IT WAS BY ACCIDENT THAT I WAS ENROLLED IN ROTC...BUT I DO NOT HAVE ANY REGRETS BECAUSE I AM HAVING SO MUCH FUN WITH OUTSIDE ACTIVITIES AND I LEARN MANY THINGS FROM THE SEMINARS HELD. aLSO, FOR ME ONE OF THE BEST PARTS OF ROTC IS THE SUNDAY MASSES. WITH ROTC, I LEARNED HOW TO BE PATIENT, HOW TO DFISCIPLINE MYSELF. I AM AN ACCOUNTANCY STUDENT, AND SUBJECTS ARE HARD, TIME SEEMS NOT ENOUGH FOR ME TO STUDY BUT EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE TRAINING SUNDAYS, WITH THE TRAININGS AND EXPERINCE ENCOUNTERED I LEARNED HOW TO MANAGE MY TIME.

    ALSO, THANKS TO MA'AM AUSTRIA WHO ALWAYS STRIVE TO MAKE OUR COMPANY FUN...

  47. Many people today have forgotten how to be disciplined. Many have also forgotten to show respect. And we have taken for granted the conveniences that are available therefore we have become weak. Being in the ROTC teaches you what classroom subjects cannot; discipline, endurance, respect. Many of us may complain about standing in the sun all morning, but that is where you learn.It's okay to complain from time to time during breaks but when the exercise is taking place we must harden ourselves to endure whatever is thrown at us. Theres no place to be squeamish in the military.

  51. It is because in joining the ROTC, aside from the enthusiasm that we will experience in joining the program; we will learn how to be disciplined people, which is the goal of this program. So many exciting things we can experience by just joining. But in all these activities, we will learn things that a disciplined person should know. That’s why as a freshman student of UST and also a basic cadet of the UST ROTC, I can say that students should enroll in the ROTC for they can learn how to be disciplined leaders in the present, and even until the future.

  52. i joined rotc to gain discipline and leadership skills and to be strong enough to lead my fellow Filipinos someday. I also want to gain knowledge about the present conflicts in our government and the communists. Nothing will happen if the root cause is not altered. For me to do that, the fastest and most accurate way, is to become a dictator, commanding every step of reconstruction. Not being manipulated by "aliens" but with the three basic values, hope, peace, and love. di naman natin kailangan ng colonial materialism, kundi dapat bumuo tayo ng sarili natin pagkakilanlan.

  53. At first, I only enrolled in the ROTC thinking "Kukunin ko na 'to para matapos na...". Since it is a requirement in graduating, I felt that I have to take the program as early as I could, (This is my first year in college.) so that I will have no trouble in my later college year, where it's tougher.

    I have no military background; I didn't even know that ROTC exists before I stepped up to college. When the ROTC started it's training, I said to myself, "Nako... Ano ba 'tong napasukan ko!?" I am not really built for strenuous activities. But as time flown by, I learned that ROTC isn't only about men in fatigues marching under the blazing sun, it's about leadership, discipline, love for country, brotherhood, and most importantly, having fun.

    ROTC really changed my points of view about many things; so many that enumerating them will cost a considerable amount of time.

    Now, I think of ROTC not just as a MUST; I think of it also as a valuable experience needed in life.

    Now, to answer the question: "Why enroll in the ROTC?".

    -If you want to serve your country;
    -If you value others' life as you value yours;
    -If you wish to enhance your physical abilities;
    -If you want to learn the value of perseverance;
    -If you prefer having fun in college;
    -If you want to have many friends;
    -If you think you need discipline;
    -If you aspire to become a leader;
    -If you want to learn how to defend yourself as well as others, and;
    -If you want to get out of college alive. ^^

    Do yourself a favor and enroll in the ROTC!

    Whats the best in ROTC,? It's when you offer sacrifice (your TIME, your EFFORT, your SWEAT) to people you don't know. Learn to EMPHATIZE.

    Being an Engineering Student (ECE), one of my dreams is to initiate the stablishment of our own "Military Facility for Research and Development of Equipments and Combat Gadgets."

    Im glad to hear that, we (Philippines) can now acces GPS for tracking victims (to be rescued) as said by one of the Rescue Team during the Fort Bonifacio Tour. But its not enough to rely on our allies. Philippines MUST have owned gears for battle.

    The said dream is not impossible... I just need support from OUR Government.

  55. HAH! i enrolled in ROTC because of the fact that military training is really exiting and full of surprises thus making ROTC the best though its not a full military training exercise, if your a normal student/person with out any experience in military(e.g No CAT background in HS) you treat it as a full military exercise because its new for you...

    Sa mga people out there syang d nyo ma xxperrience ung "THRILL" pag may na tututunan kaung bago kahit na na tutunan niyo na ito.

    THE THRILLS you would experience if you enrolled in ROTC:

    -If someone collapsed in the middle of training...(lalu na kung special unit ka)
    -If someday magkaroon ng WAR at napili kang sumabak....(buti nalang meron lecture how to protect and serve)
    -If pag ma lalate kana..(kasi andyan na ang MP redy to make parusa)
    -If kapag umuulan(kasi ala kaung training sa FIELD)
    -If pag merong activity sa labas....
    and most especially..
    pag nabilad kau sa araw dahil sa make up training...

It may be all serious during lectures and mass but the fun and games is still there.

    You may be yelled at but at the end of the day you're the one's who's gonna yell his lungs out saying I survived and all my effort was not wasted. Tipong ganon.

  58. I enrolled in this course to improve my leadership skills. It is more convenient than CWTS. I have chosen this course because I know it is the more MANLY thing to do.

  59. I chose ROTC because I know that this will mold me into a person far greater than I am now in the future. I chose to be a cadet officer not only for the experience but also for the great discipline and this great feeling of achievement. Hm. I wouldn't know the right words to say until the day of my graduation as a cadet officer. But I know one thing is for sure, That whatever negative things others may say about ROTC,I'll proudly say this in front of their faces:

    "YOU'RE JUST NOT BRAVE ENOUGH!" =))))
